Notes - Notes for Herbert Killick Winchester:
Herbert Winchester was born in 1838. He arrived in Australia on 25 May 1855 aged 17, off the "Punjab" disembarking in Adelaide. He was buried 5 August 1928, CoE Sandgate, Newcastle. His death cause quoted as acute bronchitis and senility. His occupation had been Records Clerk.
In a newspaper cutting (possibly from the Newcastle Morning Herald and Miner's Advocate, but unnamed and undated) an article about Herbert appears. He was about 87 at the time of interview so it was probably written about 1925. He recalled???.
" arriving in Port Adelaide 70 years ago, sailing from Liverpool in an old time vessel* that took some months to reach Adelaide. The method of conveyance in those days was by a spring cart, and Mr. Winchester has a recollection of having paid six shillings to travel from the port to the city of Adelaide, a distance of six miles. After a stay of two years at Gawler, South Australia, his brother, the late Mr. Phillip Winchester, who was employed by the A.A. Company, induced him to come to Newcastle, where he also was employed by the company. The brig Firefly, by which he sailed from Adelaide to Sydney took a monh to complete the journey??..When Mr. Winchester first saw Newcastle there did not appear to be many inducements for a new comer. He did not remain a great time, and decided to go to Queensland . There he followed different pursuits, and eventually returened to Newcastle and accepted a position at the foundry of Mr. Archibald Rodgers, in Church Street West. That firm had the contract for the first government wharf, beginning at the east end of the city. Mr Winchester was one of the tradesmen working on the job??..the lure of gold in bygone days attracted him to many of the rushes in the south and west of N.S.W. He also saw life on a number of outback sheep and cattle stations. His varied experiences tend to show that many difficulties and hardships had to be endured in the early days. During his travels Mr. Winchester met the late Mr. John Mackenzie F.G.S. (Fellow Geological Society, London) who was Examiner for the Coalfields for NSW. He was offered the position of clerk in charge at Newcastle in 1872 by the Examiner. This he accepted, and retained the office until 1911, when he retired at the age limit. During his long service, Mr. Winchester received flattering testimonials from the various Ministers of Mines, as well as from their under secretaries, for the capable manner in which the mining records and plans were kept. He was also entrusted with the work of collecting mineral specimens and dispatching them by sea to exhibitions held in different parts of the world; while his advice was frequenty sought by promoters of coal mining companies in Newcastle, South Maitland and other parts. The advice was freely given, and seldom at fault. Mr. Winchester has been one of the directors of the Northumberland Building Society, almost continually for 42 years, and at the last annual general meeting he was re-elected without opposition showing that his long experience in the objects of the society is appreciated."
* Name of vessel, Punjab.

Herbert naming his children as he did provides some clues to the identity of his forebears. It is interesting to consider the name Killick. Herbert Killick Winchester could have been named after his father's uncle, Richard Killick but there is also a possibility that he was named after his Grandmother Sarah's maiden name. As discussed previously, William Winchester (son of William and Sarah- Generation 1) and Mary Blake had named one of their children Richard Killick Winchester, could he have been using his Mother's maiden name or could he also have named him after Richard Killick? If this is the case Richard Killick and Elizabeth Winchester may have been first cousins as well as husband and wife (not uncommon in those days).
