Notes - Bill told Chris Morrow that James McBeath died (drowned at sea) on the wedding day of his daughter who can only be Isabella; have the date, 10 Oct 1884, from "Freeman's Journal" newspaper. Overboard from Ferry en route from Londonderry to Liverpool. Rough crossing - so rough, the ferry had to anchor overnight in Moville Bay before proceeding.
Record in PRO (public records office) lists his service in the 91st Foot in India in 1850's. He finished as a COlour Sargeant, came to Londonderry and got married very fast.
James and family lived at 233 Thistle St., Govan, 1/3/1878, age 49. Application by wife for medical relief 1/3/1878 - "Brain Paralysis" (stroke?)
Paid house rental 16/3 month in Mar 1878.

BIOGRAPHY:
James Mcbeath was my GGGrandfather. He was born in Malta when his father (also James McBeath/McBeth b.1796 d c1843) was there as a gunner in the Royal artillery. His father did his 21 years + 3 months in the artillery and then moved back to Londonderry (Cumber), Northern Ireland. James jnr was one of 8 children. One brother, William McBeth moved to the US and became a pioneer of Polk County Nebraska.- A biography of him appears on the web and his wife was Sarah Melissa Seaburg. This name was given to my mother, Millie (Sarah Melissa Seaberg Morrow) ? a granddaughter of James Mcbeath Jnr

James McBeath in William?s biography is said to be a soldier and had been to the Crimean War. There was a James McBeath in the Royal Artillery who was wounded at in the Crimea but it is not 'my' James McBeath (wrong regt, wrong dob, elsewhere during Crimean war, ...).
Our James McBeath enrolled in the 91 st regiment of the foot (highlanders) in 7 Dec 1851 in Glasgow (WO12/9289) and for most of the Crimean war he was on Spike Island off Cork. Then onto Zante, Greece and by 1858 he was in India. He was a well behaved soldier. He would often try to send a pound back to his mother Mary in Londonderry. He was discharged in 10 April 1862 at Londonderry as a colour sergeant. So he did his 10 years before ending on the Casualty returns (can't find records) but he did not get a Chelsea pension unlike his father. He got out of the army and married in a couple of months. He then lived around Londonderry having three daughters before moving to Glasgow as a clerk. There Margaret McBeath was born and then married a Morrow. McBeath is a common family middle name. He fell on hard times in 1878 and applied for poor relief. No more is known but family rumour is that he died on Isabella McBeath's wedding day drowning. I have not been able to confirm this yet.

Your interest in Anglo ? Indian information is also interesting. His daughter born in Glasgow was named Margaret West McBeath. I cant find any reason for West except perhaps Sir Raymond West who was big in India after the mutiny (I can find no ministers of religion who may have christened her giving her their name). Perhaps James McBeath was impressed with West. It was his fourth daughter.
DEATH: Family wisdom has him dying on daughter's wedding day - by drowning - Actually the crossing was from Londonderry to Liverpool (see inquist report - Liverpool Mercury, 13 Oct, 1884). Death cert has him drowned accidentally by falling into the sea (10 Oct 1884) - boat (the steamship "Telegraphic") landed Liverpool. Inquest held, Liverpool, 14 Oct 1884
From Bill Morrow's notes: James McBeath was a languages teacher (Brass plate and all)."
