    • BIOGRAPHY: The fiefdom of Normandy was created in 911 for the Viking leader Rollo (also known as Rolf).
After participating in many Viking incursions along the Seine, culminating in the siege of Paris in 886, Rollo was finally defeated by King Charles the Simple. With the Treaty of St.-Claire-sur-Epte, Rollo accepted to become a vassal to Charles III of France, converted to Christianity and was baptized with the name Robert. Charles then granted Rollo territories around Rouen, which came to be called Normandy after the Northmen (Latin Normanni).
Rollo and his immediate successors were styled as "counts" of Normandy. Some later medieval sources refer to them by the title dux, the Latin word from which the English word "duke" is derived; however, Rollo's great-grandson Richard II was the first to assuredly be styled "Duke of Normandy".
Although certain titles were used interchangeably during this period, the title of "duke" was typically reserved for the highest rank of feudal nobility ? either those who owed homage and fealty directly to kings, or who were independent sovereigns (primarily distinguished from kings by not having dukes as vassals).

      ---------------------------
In the last years of the reign of the Emperor Charlemagne, the square sails of ships Vikings made their appearance off the coast of Neustria. From 840, raids and looting become increasingly frequent. The abbey of Fontenelle is on fire, looted it of Jumieges while the city of Rouen is on fire. Northern Cotentin and the Lower Seine quickly fall into the hands of Norman invaders (Northmanni, Northmen). To avoid seeing his kingdom lost in the storm, Charles the Simple, King of the Franks, prefer to give a part of Neustria to the Normans of the Seine and the hand of his daughter Gisele their leader Rollo.

Rollo, Hrolf G?ngu " Walker " , son of Rogwald, Jarl of More, was born about 845 on one of the islands of Alesund in Norway. Sentenced to banishment by King Harald of Norway H?rfagr , Rollo brings together a troupe composed of a majority of Danish warriors and headed west during the year 874. During this journey, he goes up the Scheldt, where he engaged in looting. After serving time as a mercenary in England, Rollo crossed the Channel and set up camp at the mouth of the Seine, at Jumieges, before taking Rouen where he established his headquarters. In 886, it follows the course of the Seine and part in the siege of Paris.

Having trashed Evreux, Bayeux and its region, Rollo leads back campaign in England alongside King Alfred the Great, before returning to the continent where he captured successively the cities of Nantes, Angers and Le Mans before fail to Chartres, juilllet 911. It was at this time that Charles the Simple, king of Francia Occidentalis , unable to militarily oppose Norman invasions, enter into negotiations with the leader of the Normans of the Seine through the Archbishop of Rouen. He proposed to Rollo to seal an agreement guaranteeing the security of his kingdom in exchange for a territory "between the Epte and the sea" and a land to plunder "to pull in enough to live." Thus there is more than a millennium, during the autumn of 911, Normandy was born in Saint-Clair-sur-Epte .

The title of Duke, as the name of duchy, not really winning, after the 11th century, Rollo, Jarl of the Normans, then carries the title of prince or count, according to the habits of the time; a title it confers most of the attributes conferred on royal power, including control of the Church. Similarly, King Charles the Simple, in a deed of 918, giving an explicit recognition of " land to the Normans of the Seine, ie to Rollo and his companions , "essentially ruled out any tie of vassalage and invalidate the thesis of a supposed tribute to Rollo made ??by Saint-Clair-sur-Epte.

The new state, with Rouen as a pivot, structure gradually. Rollo, as usual Scandinavian, sharing the land with his companions, restored order at the borders and inside the country while encouraging the Scandinavian colonization of Normandy. More by realism than conviction, like most of his companions, he converted to Christianity, was baptized at Rouen in 912, as the first Robert, and adopted the Romance language. Although married Gisela, daughter of King Charles the Simple, who is still a child, Rollo ensures its progeny by a union more Frank Cole with Poppa of Bayeux, daughter of Count Beranger; outside marriage common in Nordic companies of the time which will come from William and Gerloc .

In 922, Charles the Simple, dispossessed of the throne of France by Raoul of Burgundy, is imprisoned. In 924, Rudolph of France broke the pact Charles the Simple, crossed the Epte. Rollo-cons attack, defeated the Frankish army and receives, in tribute, the Bessin and Hi?mois. The following year, hostilities resumed. Norman troops enter in Frankish territory to Amiens and Noyon. Hugh the Great, Count of Paris, outbreak response and seized the town of Eu. This episode ends the last military campaign Rollo, who was killed a few years later , leaving his son William borne by the younger Duchy. Rollo's body was buried in the cathedral of Notre-Dame de Rouen. Although converted to Christianity, Rollo does nevertheless remain attached to the rites and beliefs of his Viking ancestors. If one believes the popular rumor, his last wishes were to distribute one hundred pounds of gold to the churches in honor of God and to one hundred Christian prisoners beheaded ... to meet Odin.

In 1911, during the Millennium celebrations of the Normandy city of Rouen will carry two copies of the bronze statue of Rollo sculpted in 1863 by Arsene Letellier and erected in Rouen in 1865 . A replica will be donated to the town of Alesund in Norway, the birthplace of Rollo, the second to the city of Fargo, United States, North Dakota.
